First Designs

Dress #1: My second semester sewing at Texas Tech, I made my first original design. It was an incredible learning experience as it taught me almost everything of what not to do. But I enjoyed every minute of it. The dress did not turn out how I imagined, but the skills I learned have helped me on everything since. From the wrong fabric, to fitting the dress to a different mannequin everyday (not knowing they were different sizes), I learned that every aspect of a design matters when it comes to the final product. It took me endless hours and long nights, but I made my first design and that in itself was my accomplishment.

Dress #2: Although I began making my second dress in flat pattern, while I was finishing the first, I already knew how to get off to a better start. This dress was daunting to say the least. My teacher saw my potential and chose a particularly hard design with gathers. I had never done gathers and after many YouTube videos and starting over about three times, I had successfully added gathers to my dress. This dress was only made out of muslin, because it was more about the ability to make our own pattern and make it come to life, rather than the look of the garment. I am very proud of my dress, because I feel that within the short time of making the first and second, I had a better understanding of what designing entailed and how to make an idea turn into a wearable piece of clothing.
