Research Project

In the fall of 2018, I took Design by Draping, where I learned how to drape clothes on to fashion figures and create patterns for garments from scratch. After learning the basic drapes for skirts and tops, I was assigned a research project for the end of the semester, where I researched a designer from a different decade. I chose Mary Quant from the 60's. If you are unfamiliar with her work, she created the mini skirt, and many other memorable pieces of fashion from that decade. I chose to incorporate her style by designing an apron dress with a statement zipper and circle skirt. The top was made from a neon twill denim, while the zipper and skirt were made from poplin. The color and patterns on the fabric were inspired by the color portrayed in the designs of Alice + Olivia. I draped the top and skirt separately, made the patterns and then constructed the garment through a combination of  serging, machine stitching, and hand stitching.

Finished Drape

This is the final product of my drape, before I transfer the fabric to pattern paper. I used this for my sophomore review.
